Doug Criscitello: The complexity of China’s debt reforms

Doug Criscitello, Executive Director at the MIT Center for Finance and Policy at the MIT Sloan School of Management, explains how the Center took a look at local government borrowing in China and found that aggregate indebtedness is approaching 40% of GDP. It is not yet at a crisis stage and China has taken action to ameliorate these growing debt loads. Criscitello says that how China manages its local fiscal imbalances will be telling about their commitment to the reforms they have taken thus far.
